The Goals of Psychodynamic Therapy

Updated: Apr 3

Psychodynamic Counselling - Sets you Free

An opportunity to #talk freely and openly about what is on your mind and free from judgement and advice so the #counsellor can get to know how you think, behave and feel in your own unique world based on your experiences.

The interaction is aimed at exploring and understanding a variety of mental health issues that may be troublesome. This can sometimes be directional, as highlighting particular elements with emotional support in the moment can be vital to reach the unconscious as our life script can become known to us, familiar or scripted.

#Psychodynamic approach works with key concepts; all behaviour has a cause and is not random and originates from our unconscious. Conflicts or different perspectives can arise when a person is struggling to decide, these can show up as #self-doubt, frustration with indecisiveness, #depression or #anxiety. Adult behaviours, thoughts and feelings are rooted to our #childhood experiences which can be linked to internal processing and our external environment creating our adult personality that sometimes causes confusion.

The goals of a psychodynamic counsellor is to work through mental health issues and acknowledge emotions to enable making better choices, identifying patterns in thoughts, feelings and behaviours to become self aware and gain the power to make adjustments to improve relationships with those around us and towards self. It creates an opportunity with the right emotional support to recognise and address any defenses such as avoidance to identify when behaviours may be a resistance to change or distress but can end up preventing moving forward with life.

The relationship involves developing a dynamic assessment for that person's life by gaining information about their history including their relationships, accomplishments and failures, personal strengths and deficits, #traumas and losses, substance use or #addiction patterns, and anything that the therapist and individual feel is important.

Acknowledging unconscious thoughts, feelings and behaviours may lead to identifying patterns and conflicts that create adult #phobias, addictions, #compulsive and automatic behaviours.

"Accepting ourselves for who we truly are, is when we can genuinely choose to make change for the better. Psychodynamic Therapy and the counsellors goal is to set you free.........."
